Atividade 3º (A e B) EM - Língua Inglesa - prof. Guilherme

During our classes, we've discussed a little about comparative and superlative sentences in English. You must remember that the quantity of syllables influences the process of adding adverbs to the words.
Pay attention to the following examples:

COMPARATIVE SENTENCES:

Examples:

To live in Brazil is safer than other South-American countries.
Buying books is cheaper than buying clothes.

Both adjectives safe and cheap have one syllable. When we introduce them into a comparative sentence, we have to add the suffix -er and the conjunction than to complete the sense of comparison. Remember: some other adjectives have two syllables and the process is the same as above.

The adjectives that have two or more syllables suffer other process. Pay attention:

Examples:
Studying English is more difficult than studying History.
Sarah is more intelligent than John.

Both adjectives difficult and intelligent have more two or more syllables. According to it and differently than the one-syllable adjectives, these adjectives receive the adverb more and the conjunction than.

Here's a list of some comparative adjectives.

SUPERLATIVE SENTENCES

The process of formulating superlative sentences is similar to the process of the comparative ones.

Examples:

Qatar is the richest country in the world.
Jon Brower Minnoch is the fattest person of all time.

Both adjectives rich and fat have one syllable. When we introduce them into a superlative sentence, we have to add the article the and the suffix -est to complete the idea of the superlatives. As you probably notice, to the adjective fat we've to add another "t" before the suffix. All the adjectives in which the endings are followed by the sequence of consonant, verb and consonant, we must add an extra letter. For exemple:

big - the biggest
hot - the hottest

Now, the verbs that have two or more syllables suffer a different process.

Example:

Michael Jackson was the most popular singer of all time.
China is the most populated country in the world.

Both adjectives popular and populated have two or more syllables. When we introduce them into a superlative sentence, we have to add the article the and the adverb most before them.

Here's a list of some superlative adjectives.
